Put your ISRC codes into your audio files.

TAGINDX is a small, free tool that writes ISRC codes into the metadata of your WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC and M4A files. Drop the files in, type the codes or let TAGINDX number them in order, and press Write. The audio itself is never touched.

Made for one job

Drop in, write out

Drag in files or whole folders. TAGINDX shows each file's format and the ISRC it already has, and a column for the code you want to give it.

Number a whole release

Give a country, registrant and year and a first number, and TAGINDX hands out consecutive codes in list order: FI-ABC-26-00001, 00002, 00003…

Checked before it counts

Codes are validated as you type, and a code used twice in the same list is flagged. Each file is written to a temporary copy, read back, and compared audio-for-audio before it replaces the original. An optional backup copy keeps the old file.

Everything else stays

Titles, artists, artwork and every other tag are kept exactly as they were. Only the ISRC is added, replaced or removed.

Five formats

WAV and AIFF (in an ID3 chunk), MP3 (ID3v2 TSRC), FLAC (Vorbis ISRC field) and M4A/ALAC/AAC (iTunes-style ISRC atom). Apple's own readers, and the tools distributors use, find the code in all of them.

Questions

What is an ISRC?

The International Standard Recording Code: a 12-character code that identifies one recording, for example FI-ABC-26-00001. Streaming services, distributors and royalty societies use it to match plays to the right recording.

Where do I get my codes?

From your national ISRC agency, which gives you a three-character registrant code, or from your music distributor, who often assigns codes for you. TAGINDX does not issue ISRCs; it only writes the ones you have.

Does it change my audio?

No. Only the metadata is rewritten. TAGINDX compares a checksum of the audio before and after and refuses to replace the file if anything differs.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no trial, no telemetry. TAGINDX is made by RMKSOUND, the same small company behind SOUNDINDX, SCRIPTINDX, MIXINDX and RECINDX.

Which files does it not handle?

Version 1 does not read RF64/BW64 WAV files, Ogg/Opus, or very old ID3v2.2 tags. It tells you and leaves the file as it was.

System requirements?

macOS 13 Ventura or newer. The app is signed and notarized by Apple.
